Gemba:

The Legacy of Sensei Ritsuo Shingo (Shingo-san):

Son of Shigeo Shingo (Father of Modern Manufacturing)

Translator of the first book on the Toyota Production System (TPS) into English

TPS does not mean “Toyota Production System”, but rather “Thinking People System”. The major difference between the East (Japan) and the West (the U.S. and Europe) is not a set of initials; it is a way of thinking (principles – values – behaviors), a leadership model internalized by people through the “Toyota Way”.

Principles I apply, thanks to my mentorship with Sensei Ritsuo Shingo:

Genchi Genbutsu – Observe from the Gemba

Senaka wo Miseru – Show your back (lead by example)

Never give up – Never surrender!

Leadership starts at the Gemba.

“The Toyota Production System (TPS) is the accumulation of small improvement ideas through acts of leadership.”

Kai = “Change”

From 2021 until Sensei Shingo’s passing in 2023, I had the unique honor and privilege of being personally mentored by Toyota Sensei Ritsuo Shingo in TPS Leadership, Gemba Walks, Kaizen, and practical leadership skills.

This was an unprecedented coaching–mentoring program — the only one Shingo-san ever conducted outside Toyota — making me the only Spanish-speaking facilitator of Practical TPS Leadership and Lean.
